E-Verify Can Be Strengthened

By June 26, 2013Immigration

One of the critical components to successful immigration reform is an updated and robust e-verify system.  Employers need a reliable, accurate and efficient employment eligibility verification system that also provides for fair enforcement of the laws for both the employee and the employer. The current employment verification system, while improved, creates undue liability for employers and does not deter identity fraud. It would be unfortunate if as a result of immigration reform we get really good at verifying documents, but make no improvements in verifying that people are who they say they are in those documents.

Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) is pushing for an amendment to the immigration bill currently under consideration in the Senate that takes meaningful steps towards strengthening the system and ensuring our borders are more secure by getting at the core of verification – identity authentication – and also clarifies protections for employers that act in good faith. This is an important improvement to the immigration bill and the NAM supports its inclusion in the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act.
