Friday Factory Tune: I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo

From The Kalamazoo (MI) Gazette, Aug. 5, “Five Michigan manufacturing executives named to federal advisory council“:

WASHINGTON — The CEO of Stryker Corp. was one of five Michigan business leaders named today to a federal government panel on American manufacturing. Stephen MacMillan, who also is Stryker’s president and chairman, was named to the 25-member Manufacturing Council by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, according to a press release from the Commerce Department.

Stryker is a Kalamazoo-based medical technology company.

What a good opportunity to post this clip from the 1942 movie, “Orchestra Wives,” Tex Beneke singing with the Modernaires and then Nicholas Brothers dancing with the Glenn Miller Band, “I’ve got a girl in Kalamazoo.”

Beneke does his usual smooth job — and that’s Cesar Romero on piano — but the real revelation is the Nicholas Brothers’ amazing physicality in their dance number. Let’s see the contestants on “So You Think You Can Dance” do THAT!

The matching of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tex Beneke, the Modernaires and the Nicholas Brothers also did a swell job with Chattanooga Choo-Choo in the 1941 movie, “Sun Valley Serenade.”

The other Michigan manufacturers on the council:

  • Joseph Anderson Jr., chairman and CEO of auto-parts supplier TAG Holdings LLC.
  • Michael Gambrell, executive vice president of Dow Chemical Co.
  • Fred Keller, chairman and CEO of Cascade Engineering, a Grand Rapids manufacturer.
  • Donna Zobel, president and CEO of Myron Zucker Inc., a Sterling Heights-based maker of energy efficiency equipment
