Many Post Offices, Designated

Every week, in preparing the Dispatch from the Front week-ahead preview, we look at the House suspensions calendar, the list of usually noncontroversial bills and resolutions that require a two-thirds vote to pass.

There are almost always bills on the calendar to name a Post Office after a local dignitary or, in recent years, a serviceman who died in war in Iraq and Afghanistan. So we wondered how many of these bills have been considered this session of Congress.

Using the search terms “designate” and “Postal” — as in “United States Postal Service” — we arrived at the list below of 85 bills so far in 2009-2010.

We spot several former members of Congress, living (Jim Kolbe of Arizona, Wes Watkins of Oklahoma) and dead (Mickey Leland of Texas) being so honored. There are also the famous — Ronald Reagan, Martin Luther King Jr., and Cesar Chavez.

Some might draw a populist point from the list — there’s an awful lot of time and money being spent here — but we tend toward the civic culture view of things: There is value in honoring those who achieve, lead and sacrifice. We’ve put the list of resolutions in the extended entry, and here is the list in .pdf, as well.
