Dangerous Carbon Emissions? What’s Next, Killer Oxygen?

From the President’s White House news conference today:

At a time of great fiscal challenges, this legislation is paid for by the polluters who currently emit the dangerous carbon emissions that contaminate the water we drink and pollute the air we breathe. It also provides assistance to businesses and communities as they make the gradual transition to clean energy technologies.

Why would any supporter of cap-and-trade legislation, much less the President, make such an over-the-top claim in scripted remarks? “Dangerous carbon emissions?” Do you mean carbon dioxide, a byproduct of respiration and an inevitable result of ALL human activity?

“Contaminate the water we drink?” How is carbon dioxide contaminating the water we drink? First we’ve heard of the carbolic acid catastrophe.

More than silly, the remarks are invidious, the opposite of claims to want to “bring us together.” Indeed, this scripted statement is reminiscent of the comments the President made when promoted a tax increase on companies with international operations, full of populist rhetoric about “shipping jobs overseas.” It was inaccurate, misleading, and an unjustified attack on U.S. business, you know, jobs creators.
