Card Check: Persuasion Through Misrepresentation

We noted in a post below the excellent Wall Street Journal editorial, “Unionize or Die,” about organized labor’s ugly tactics in trying to sell the anti-democratic Employee Free Choice Act. On the Opinion homepage, the Journal adds: “This week, we saw how far Big Labor will go to end secret-ballot elections.”

Isn’t that the truth.

Take how far the SEIU went in abusing the following sentence from the editorial: “The bill doesn’t remove the secret-ballot option from the National Labor Relations Act but in practice makes it a dead letter.”

Here’s how the SEIU’s twists that sentence in a blog post, “Wall Street Journal: Employee Free Choice Act ‘does not remove the secret ballot’“:

In this morning’s Wall Street Journal, the corporate-friendly editorial board admits:

“The bill doesn’t remove the secret-ballot option from the National Labor Relations Act,” wrote the WSJ.

There you have it. The Employee Free Choice Act “doesn’t remove the secret ballot.”

How sleezy, to fundamentally misrepresent a critic’s position. What’s even stranger, how obvious. It’s hard to disguise hacking off half a sentence in order to reverse its meaning.

Yet the SEIU’s is joined in the hacking by ThinkProgress, the blog from the obstensibly respectable Center for American Progress:

In a stunning reversal, the anti-labor Wall Street Journal editorial page admitted today that one of the key messages in Big Business’s fight against the Employee Free Choice Act is false. “The bill doesn’t remove the secret-ballot option from the National Labor Relations Act,” wrote the WSJ editors today.

“Stunning reversal?” Ridiculous.

This kind of obvious misrepresentation shows organized labor flailing about, knowing that the more the public learns about the provisions of the Employee Free Choice Act, the more they reject it. So along with the bullying, the SEIU and its allies resort to lying.

Dishonest and desperate — the hallmarks of the campaigners for the Employee Free Choice Act.

    The misleading information coming out of the pro-EFCA factions and George Miller’s committee are just great examples of how union’s behave. Does anyone doubt that they will use any talking point to mislead workers to sign their organizing cards?
