Friday Follies: Buddy Holly on Arthur Murray’s Dance Party

By February 6, 2009Friday Follies

Another clash of cultures, chronologically speaking — Buddy Holly and the Crickets at the Paramount Theater, NYC, on the Arthur Murray Dance Party, December 1957. As Kathryn Murray says, “No matter what you think of rock ‘n roll, I think you have to keep a nice open mind about what the youngsters will go for, otherwise the youngsters won’t feel that you understand them.” (Does anyone still have her accent?)

This week marked the 50th anniversary of Buddy’s death on his way to a show in Moorhead, Minn., and there are two new CDs of his music out — really! So here’s a good review of the music from the WSJ, and the video from 51 years ago in NYC. Good drumming, too.

For a bonus, the best music video ever, “Buddy Holly” by Weezer.
