WETA, the main PBS television station in the D.C. area, has been showing “Athens: The Dawn of Democracy” this weekend. In episode one, we learn the Athenians voted by secret ballot. From the preview:

ATHENS: THE DAWN OF DEMOCRACY reveals the sophisticated voting systems and mechanisms developed by the Athenians to underpin their democratic experiment: secret ballot systems, as well as ingenious random selection machines to thwart bribery and corruption.

Votes were cast via clay “ostrakons,” with one type representing a no vote, another a yes vote.

Elsewhere, a reminder that Congressional backers of the Employee Free Choice Act actually do support secret ballots for union employees — but only in Mexico. Not here in the United States.
