The View from N.C. Manufacturers

In conjunction with its annual “Manufacturing Summit,” the North Carolina Chamber has released results of a survey of the state’s manufacturers, who share the concerns of their peers around the country. From the news release:

The taxes that manufacturers feel hinder job creation and economic growth the most in North Carolina right now are the property tax on business machinery and equipment (No. 1 at 45 percent) and the motor fuels tax (No. 2 at 44 percent). Seventy-five percent of manufacturers polled believe that the state needs additional energy supplies, especially electricity, due to growth. And 62 percent identified the workforce in North Carolina as satisfactory.

The level of satisfaction with the workforce was higher than we would normally expect coming from a survey of manufacturers. Elsewhere in the country, the “skills gap” ranks high as a concern to manufacturing companies. Then again, in CNBC’s review of business climates last year — America’s Top States for Business — North Carolina ranked No. 1in the country for workforce
