Reaction to the Sentencing of Mel Weiss
Monday, June 2, 2008If Congress has time to investigate steroid use in baseball and the videotaping of defensive play-calling in professional football, one would think it could find time to investigate whether our civil courts are being routinely corrupted by those who can profit handsomely in doing so.
“Earlier this year, I joined with Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) in calling on House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to schedule a hearing to examine the Milberg Weiss scandal and its impact on American families. To date, there has been no response from the Democratic leadership at all. The Democrat-led Congress is sitting idle in the face of this threat to our economy.
It is time for Congress to investigate this scandal, look into the growing culture of greed and corruption permeating the plaintiffs’ bar, and repair confidence in America’s civil justice system.
Mr. Weiss’ trip to federal prison is just the latest sad chapter in a series of scandals where high-flying trial lawyers have abused plaintiffs, investors and the legal system.
Oh, right.
