From the Consumer Electronics Show

CES.gifEditor’s note: The big event of the year has arrived in Las Vegas, technology, communications and mediawise — The 2008 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show), sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association. The NAM has several of our policy and technology people on hand, and we’ll carry blog reports during the week.

Live from Las Vegas, it’s the NAM’s own Peggy Ireland

It’s Monday morning, the first official day of 2008 International CES. Although I’ve been here before I am still amazed by the lights and beauty of Las Vegas. Even though the show hasn’t officially started, I’ve already seen much more than I will have time to write about before I head over to the Las Vegas Convention Center this morning.

I arrived here on Thursday evening to attend a much smaller event, the Association of Personal Computer User Group’s (APCUG) Annual Convention. We have a “Power User Group” here at the NAM, and I’ve been taking a look at how the traditional computer user group model might provide training benefits in the workplace.

One of the presenters I enjoyed the most during this event was Greg Hayes, the Technical Solutions Manager for RAXCO Software, Inc. Greg has been a Microsoft MVP for Windows File Systems for the past five years and did a great job of explaining the various types of files systems.

Speaking of Microsoft, Microsoft’s Mindshare did some very informative presentations on Windows Live OneCare and Windows Home Server. Both products appear to be very “user friendly” and automate security and back-up features.

I am hoping to get a chance some time today or tomorrow to try out Phonecasting, which allows one to use a regular telephone to do a pod cast and talk about some of the other amazing things I’ve seen, including NPR’s radio for the deaf, Viable’s VPad, a videophone for the next generation, Vectrix Corporation’s all-electric maxi-scooter, and for you photographers and graphic artists out there, The Tiffen Company’s Tiffen Dfx Digital Filter Suite.

There is so much more but the shuttle will be here any minute, so until later…
