The Des Moines Register publishes a good review of biofuels — ethanol mostly — as a political issue during 2008 presidential campaigns.
National Association of Manufacturers’ President John Engler offers concluding remarks:
Q: Can increased production of biofuels help control energy costs?
A: Not by itself, said John Engler, president of the National Association of Manufacturers and a former Michigan governor. “Your big four fuel sources today — oil, gas, coal and nuclear — are still going to be the big four for some time,” he said. Candidates need to recognize the severity of the problem, the fact that high energy prices and the lack of an energy strategy can cost U.S. workers jobs, he said. “And just not in the future, they can cost right today.”
