The Demand for Machinists in Virginia, Elsewhere

From The Roanoke Times:

Dan Hughes, manager of manufacturing for Graham White Manufacturing in Salem, said Graham White’s demand for machinists should increase in coming years.

“If we look at our company, over the next 12 years we will see between 50 percent to 75 percent of our current machining work force retire or go part time due to retirement,” Hughes said.

He said business dealings with several machine shops in the Roanoke Valley suggest “they are actively looking for machinists.”

The story highlights local efforts to meet the demand, including the training available from the Arnold R. Burton Technology Center in Salem.
