Speaker Pelosi is saying she wants a vote on energy legislation by the Thanksgiving break, with a House vote as early as next week. Given the wholesale rejection of market forces and domestic supply so far, we doubt any House-Senate “compromise” will address America’s energy needs, but there are varying degrees of possible lousiness. Adoption of the Senate’s CAFE standards would be lousy-cubed.
Reps. Baron Hill (D-IN) and Lee Terry (R-NE), sponsors of a realistic vehicle fuel-efficiency bill, H.R. 2927, are warning Speaker Pelosi against going the Senate routé on CAFE. In a letter to the Speaker, they wrote:
The Hill-Terry bill is a commonsense alternative ot the Senate language. It would establish:
Continued use of separate fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks. Realistic timelines to account for the time it takes to design and amnufacture new engine-transmissions (powertrains). A reformed fuel economy standard for cars and light trucks allowing an attribute-based system which is based on sound science, safety and cost-benefit analysis. A flexible fuel economy target range.
Should the final bill create a fuel economy standard more strict than the Hill-Terry bill, we would be forced to reconsider our support for the entire energy package when it comes before the full House of Representatives for a vote.
