Weighty Topics, Overblown Rhetoric

By October 15, 2007Global Warming, Health Care

From the BBC:

The public health threat posed by obesity in the UK is a “potential crisis on the scale of climate change”, the health secretary has warned.

Seems like a good opportunity to link to this book by Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi: Nanny State: How Food Fascists, Teetotaling Do-Gooders, Priggish Moralists, and other Boneheaded Bureaucrats are Turning America into a Nation of Child.”It’s a global phenomenon, you see, or at least one endemic to wealthy societies able to afford a professional class of finger-waggers.

Harsanyi blogs at Davidharsanyi.com . And a tip of the hat to Andrew Stuttaford.

  • I don’t think we need to bother about obesity over here in the UK as, according to the papers, there are plenty of other things which will get us first. Bird flu is going to wipe out half the population when it mutates with foot & mouth disease and blue tongue taking the farm animals out. Deadly mosquitoes, spiders and other non UK animals are coming over in droves from other countries due to global warming giving us mediterranean type weather (in between all the floods that is). With all that going on it’s no wonder we like to wreck our livers with a little tipple every now and again. It’s even a risky trip going to hospital as there’s a good chance of contracting MRSA.
