The National Taxpayers Union has organized a letter signed by 234 academic and professional economists warning against the inclusion of market-harming provisions in congressional energy legislation. News release, and letter (.pdf).
We, the undersigned economists, write to strongly advise against the inclusion of damaging anti-market provisions in the energy legislation now moving through Congress. History has shown that attempts by the federal government to tax, regulate, and subsidize our way to more plentiful and secure energy have failed miserably. This Congress ought not to repeat those expensive mistakes when considering energy policy.
There might well be a provision or two where we would differ with the NTU, but the economists’ letter is very strong and very welcome, especially on the proposed tax increases on energy providers.
