With All Due Respect to the Food Service Industry

In line for a cup of coffee and a danish this morning at a local D.C. bakery, one hears:

“Next guest, please…”

Waited and checked to see if this was the exception. Nope, it’s the standard line now used by employees of this particular restaurant/bakery. “Next guest, please.”

Aaaarrrgh. Being a customer is entirely respectable. It’s an accurate term to describe someone wanting to buy a cup of coffee. We’re not clients, visitors, patients or supplicants. Why gussy it up?

The word is “customer.”
