VP Cheney, Majority Whip Clyburn to Address NAM

By February 3, 2007General

Busy times at the National Association of Manufacturers. We’re gearing up for the Feb. 13-15th “72 Hours to Educate and Celebrate,” an annual event that brings hundreds of NAM members from around the country to Washington to make the case for manufacturing with their local Members of Congress.

NAM President John Engler described the effort in a recent column in The Hill, the Capitol Hill newspaper:

Many associations sponsor “fly-ins,” of course, and NAM’s will feature many of the activities — receptions, breakfasts, guest speakers — that are the hallmarks of these events.

Still, the NAM makes a special effort to ensure that our “72 Hours” achieves its educational goals. We work with our members to develop a message that’s consistent yet matched to regional concerns. We reach out to newly elected members of Congress, and schedule visits to members viewed as not necessarily sympathetic to the manufacturing agenda. For manufacturers, there is no political terra incognita to steer clear of.

As for those guest speakers he mentions:

  • Vice President Dick Cheney (issue breakfast, Feb. 14)
  • Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, D-SC (luncheon briefing, Feb. 15)
  • Fred Barnes, Weekly Standard and Fox News (Feb. 13, keynote speaker)
  • Pretty good line-up, eh?

We’ll have more about the “72 Hours” visit at it gets closer.
