Saturday Video: US FIRST Kicks Off!

By January 6, 2007Cool Stuff Being Made

This Saturday we take a little turn from our usual “Cool Stuff Being Made” videos to feature the kickoff of the US FIRST competition in Manchester, New Hampshire.

US FIRST (an acronym for, “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”) was founded in l989 by inventor, innovator and manufacturer Dean Kamen. Kamen is best known as the inventor of the Segway Human Transporter, but the fact is he’s invented scores of groundbreaking and life-improving products. He embodies all that is best about the ingenuity and tenacity of American Manufacturers.

Every Year, FIRST sponsors a Robotics competition for young people. Kamen’s’ vision for FIRST — and the robotics competition — is to motivate young people to explore career opportunities in science, technology and engineering. And it works. In fact, FIRST not only builds science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills. We ran an article in a recent edition of the NAM magazine, Leadership, that tells the story of Kamen and FIRST. Click here to see it.

So today at 10 a.m. EST, FIRST will kick off this year’s competition. Click here to see the official NASA site that will host the live webcast of the event. It should be available in archived form after 10 at the same site. Click here to see some background on the kickoff.

So forgive us for posting this in lieu of a more traditional “Cool Stuff Being Made” video but the truth is that without the ingenuity and know-how that Dean Kamen has and is fostering in young people, there would be no cool things being made at all.
