Given Ohio’s prominence in the nation’s manufacturing economy — ranking third among states in output — it’s clear that business and community leaders understand the stakes at play in ensuring that potential employees gain the skills and training to succeed in the manufacturing workplace. So when the “Dream It! Do It!” campaign gears up in the Buckeye State, it really gears up.
One of seven kick-off events in Northeast Ohio was held Wednesday in North Canton, with Jim Griffith of the Timken Company heading up the effort. As Dream It! Do It! initiatives come into existence all around the country, people are seeing real displays of leadership from individual manufacturers like Jim (an NAM board member), local educators, government officials and economic developers. They act with a sense of great enthusiasm, but also great concern about the future of U.S. manufacturing…and America’s next generation of workers.

“‘Dream It Do It” is aimed at convincing young people that there are attractive jobs in manufacturing,” Griffith said. The program “is simply about providing young people with opportunity.”
MAGNET’s survey shows that only 9.5 percent of all young adults said “well-paid” describes manufacturing jobs “very well.”
But the average Stark State College of Technology graduate who goes into manufacturing starts at an average of $40,000 per year, said Stark State President John O’Donnell. He said manufacturing is misunderstood by parents, high school counselors and teachers.
MAGNET figures show that the average pay for a manufacturing worker is $63,000.
