The Clinton-McCain Commission to Fix Social Security
Thursday, December 7, 2006Interesting piece in yesterday’s WaPo by Ruth Marcus, teeing up an idea for a bipartisan commission headed by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to study and propose solutions for the long-term solvency of Social Security. (Wonder if they’ve signed the pledge?)
Not sure we agree with everything Marcus says therein, but it is certainly true that the buzz around the issue of Social Security continues to grow. It just might be that the stars and personalities have aligned and that real Social Security reform may be achievable.
Is that critical mass we see forming….?
I’m eager to see what happens next. There’s a lot of private, high-level talking going on in DC these days. I’m hopeful that we’ll see some good things come from this willingness of powerful Democrats and top-level Administration officials engaging one on one.
In my opinion, it comes down to what do Sen. Clinton and other presidential hopefuls want…get it off the table before 2008 or not.
And, the media talk that seems to be increasing about doing just that is super helpful. Why wouldn’t they? D’s get to write the bill and will paint Bush as a privatizer if he doesn’t sign. And, for them, waiting a few more years has some unwanted consequences–like it will cost a LOT more.
wonder who is going to get screwed by the plan they come up with.
