A Visit with Sen. Rick Santorum

By September 26, 2006General

Our regularly scheduled “blogger’s briefing” featured Sen. Rick Santorum (PA). Most of the questions were election-related, so we’ll skip reporting on that part because we want to focus on three key issues for manufacturers…

Health information technology, energy and the R&D tax credit. Jim Neill in our office also asked us to get Sen. Santorum’s thoughts on adjournment.

Sen. Santorum said the Senate would be focused on three issues: Legislation to address the recent Hamden vs. Rumsfeld Supreme Court decision, the NSA wiretapping issue and defense appropriations will round out the work of the Senate until adjournment, which, he notes, all depends on the cooperation of the Democrats.

Senator Santorum indicated that he does support Health IT, legislation opening up the Outer Continential Shelf and R&D tax credit legislation but, with about two weeks left in the legislative session, its difficult to make this the first priority, especially since it appears this will be a national security election.

The Senator remarked that the national security issues before the Senate are the three most important issues but that the 4th, 5th and 6th priority is definitely Health IT, OCS and R&D Tax Credit legislation, the latter of which will most likely be resolved in a combined tax bill.

Still, “it will be tough to bring those forward if there are objections by the other side.” Seems more likely that these will be addressed in a lame duck session which Santorum “absolutely expects” to happen.
