Welcome the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act

By July 21, 2006Energy

Yesterday, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Pete Domenici (R-NM) formally introduced the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act. This bill will open 8.3 million resource-rich acres to development, thereby beginning to drive down the price of energy for us all. According to the well-respected Minerals Management Service, this area contains 1.26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 5.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The natural gas supply made available through this bill is enough to heat and cool nearly 6 million homes for 15 years.

Here’s a link to the actual bill, and here’s a link to a map of the area where exploration would be allowed. Remember, we are the only country in the world that limits access to its own natural resources. We watch our prices rise while we sit on enormous reserves. This bill will go a distance toward starting to unleash those reserves and helping US manufacturers compete with the rest of the world.
