Want Lower Energy Prices? Now’s the Time to Weigh In

Both your regular blog readers know that we are the only country in the world that limits access to its own natural resources. China just hit a big natural gas field off its coast and is busy tapping it already, while we sit on 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, 85% untapped due to government restrictions.

Thanks to the tenacity of people like House Resources Chairman Richard Pombo (R-CA) and Rep. John Peterson (R-PA), we are finally at a point where some of this enormous reserve will be able to be tapped by us, so we can remain competitive and create jobs here in the US. As you know, the Deep Ocean Energy Resources (DOER) bill passed the House Resources Committee this week with a strong bi-partisan vote. Now it heads to the floor. This bill will allow us to tap our own resources. This is now a sprint, not a marathon, as the vote in the full House will come some time next week, in all likelihood.

So what can you do?

Drop a letter to your Representative. Tell them you’re tired of paying the highest prices in the world for natural gas while we sit on some of the largest reserves in the world. Tell them you’re sick and tired of us being the only country in the world that restricts access to its own natural resources, while our competitors just shake their heads and laugh at us — and tap all their sources of energy — oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear. Also, why not click here to write a letter to the editor of your local paper? If you need a hand with that, just drop us a note. Here’s a link to some facts on the issue that you can use, and here’s a link to a site with lots of tools you can use, including sample letters to employees.

The time is nigh. More energy will result in lower prices, which will make us more competitive and ultimately create more jobs and prosperity for us all. If you want lower energy prices, now is the time to weigh in.
