On the day after the US Energy Information Agency announced its projections that world energy demand would soar — largely due to escalating demand from India and China — comes this idiotic editorial from the St. Petersburg Times. And no, this is not St. Petersburg, Russia — they actually produce oil over there and sell it all over the world. This is St. Petersburg, Florida. Remember that Florida has enormous stores of both oil and natural gas off its Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, and Floridans consume a lot of energy (think of the air conditioning alone!). But in classic NIMBY fashion, the St. Pete Times says “no” to drilling.
It is, to borrow their phrase, nuts.
