Like the President, we are big fans of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). We don’t see HSAs (or Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs)) completely replacing existing coverages overnight or even eventually. There is too much diversity (much to the chagrin of the one-size, one-shape crowd) and too much conservatism in the benefits world. Nevertheless, HSAs now – and as they continue to improve and diversify in the future – are a powerful tool to fix health care costs (e.g. defined contribution) and to encourage greater consumer engagement in health care. HSAs and consumerism will play a vital role in the health care system of our future.
