By February 8, 2006Health Care

HC5 Coalition Meets Tomorrow at 10:00am – The Coalition on Catastrophic and Chronic Health Care Costs (HC5) will have our inaugural 2006 meeting tomorrow (2/9) at 10:00am ET here at the NAM. We will discuss our 2006 plans for better managing high dollar health care claims and chronic health conditions. For more information on HC5, click here. Come join us!

Fighting “Fair Share Health Care” Campaign – Labor representatives are very clear about their goals: they simultaneously would like to shore up the employer-based health care system, they would like to mandate employer participation and they would like to help specify the size and shape of the benefits we offer. We agree with them on the need to protect employers’ ability to offer health benefits; we disagree with them on most each and everything else. We will fight them … and win!

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) have filed suit to challenge the Maryland “Fair Share” law enacted over Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich’s veto. We strongly support the RILA lawsuit based on ERISA preemption. This but the first shot in a long war in many states as well as the federal arena.

Anti-Fair Share Coalition Efforts – We are also working with the state-oriented Tax on Jobs Coalition (National Retail Federation and others) and have established an ad hoc working group on the federal implications of the AFL-CIO, SEIU, Families USA campaign to mandate employer health coverage.

We held our inaugural conference call this past Friday and will hold our next call on Friday February 24th. Please let me know if you are interested in joining these allied efforts on either the state or federal level.
