The Democrats Launch Energy Independence Campaign

By October 20, 2005Energy

Last week, while you were sleeping, the Democrats unveiled their plan to achieve energy independence by the year 2020, about the time Social Security goes bust. This press release from Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), who’s leading the effort, is a little thin on details — press releases often are — but from what we can glean, it looks like their focus is on Enron. There’s a whole paragraph dedicated to it, so at least they’re homing in on the real problem… . Beyond that, from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s site, it appears that the plan includes :

— A massive commitment to support research and development necessary to develop alternative energy sources;

— Hydrogen, biofuels, solar, wind, geothermal development;

— Prevent price gouging (anyone opposed…?);

— Reduce Demand for Oil and Natural Gas (If it gets expensive enough, we’ll do that, and reduce demand for jobs right along with it);

— Invest in Energy Efficiency.

You can see the whole plan here and can take part in the discussion on Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s blog, where reaction is decidedly mixed. We’ve long said that efficiency and looking for new sources of energy aren’t mutually exclusive. We need to do both and manufacturers are at the cutting edge of energy efficiency. We have to be, as we constantly wring costs out of every aspect of our operations so we can compete in the global market while paying the highest natural gas prices in the world.

Let us know what you think of this plan. And remember, if you’re shivering this winter, thank an environmentalist. Thirty years’ worth of virtual moratorium have led us to where we are today.
